Yet many organisations still lack clear visibility into where that data is stored, who can access it, how long it is retained, and whether it is being used beyond its original purpose. As AI systems gain access to larger volumes of information, these questions become increasingly important.
The business impact can be significant. IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report 2024 found that the average global cost of a data breach reached USD 4.88 million, the highest level recorded to date. As AI becomes more deeply embedded into business operations, strong data governance is becoming just as important as AI performance itself.
The Rise of Shadow AI
One of the fastest-growing concerns for organisations is the emergence of Shadow AI — the use of AI tools without the visibility or approval of IT, security, or compliance teams.
Employees are increasingly turning to publicly available AI platforms to create content, analyse information, summarise documents, and automate tasks. While these tools can improve productivity, they can also create new risks.
Business proposals, customer records, financial information, contracts, source code, and other sensitive data are often uploaded to external AI platforms without a full understanding of how that information is stored or processed. Traditional cybersecurity frameworks were not designed to manage this kind of exposure, making governance more important than ever.
Why Data Sovereignty Matters More Than Ever
As AI adoption grows, data sovereignty is moving from a compliance issue to a strategic business consideration.
Data sovereignty refers to an organisation’s ability to determine where its data is stored, processed, and governed. This has become especially important for sectors handling sensitive information, including banking, healthcare, government, education, and telecommunications.
Many AI platforms operate across multiple regions and jurisdictions. While this helps improve scale and performance, it can also create challenges around data localisation, privacy requirements, and regulatory accountability.
For Indian businesses, understanding where data resides and how it is governed is becoming a critical part of infrastructure planning as AI moves deeper into core business processes.
Padma Reddy Sama, Co-Founder, BharathCloud, shared, “AI is only as strong as the data ecosystem behind it. While many organisations focus on what AI can help them achieve, an equally important consideration is whether they maintain control over the data that powers those systems. Today, governance, data sovereignty, and security are no longer viewed merely as compliance requirements; they are increasingly becoming key factors that influence trust, resilience, and competitive advantage in an AI-driven business environment.”
Building Governance Into AI Adoption
The solution is not to slow down AI adoption. Businesses that delay implementation risk falling behind competitors that are already benefiting from AI-driven efficiencies.
However, successful adoption must be supported by strong governance frameworks. This includes establishing clear data ownership, defining acceptable AI usage policies, maintaining secure infrastructure environments, strengthening monitoring and audit capabilities, and ensuring collaboration between technology, legal, compliance, and business teams.
AI governance works best when it is built into the adoption process rather than added later as a corrective measure.
Trust Will Define the Next Phase of AI
The future of AI will be shaped not only by innovation but also by trust. Customers, regulators, investors, and business partners increasingly expect organisations to demonstrate transparency in how data is collected, managed, and used. Businesses that can combine AI innovation with responsible data practices will be better positioned to scale confidently and sustainably.
As AI becomes a permanent part of business operations, data control can no longer be treated as an afterthought. The organisations that gain the most from AI will not necessarily be the first to adopt it, but those that can use it responsibly, securely, and with a clear understanding of the data that powers it.
